The latest news from Calpine would make it 72 operating plants (18,090 MW) The average heat rate according to their
Web conference would be about 7580 BTU/KWh. The heat rate can vary with weather conditions. However, you have to consider that some of the units are for peaking sales.
If a Combined cycle plant in California with a heat rate
of 6200 is competing for sales with an old gas /oil fired plant with a heat rate of 10300, you will like find that the older plant is shut down (for maintenance?) since they get the same spark spread rate.
