Once we realized that continued fighting and dying was not
going to solve the problem, the support of the nation faltered.

For whichever reason the support faltered (and I would take objection to your statement above, the support faltered among the youth of this country who began to see the war as immoral), the Vietnam war demonstrated to the US that you can actually lose a war that has domestic opposition.

It most certainly did -- until the incompetent leadership took us down the path of weakness. Once we realized that continued fighting and dying was not going to solve the problem, the support of the nation faltered.

Well, by your standards [and I emphasize, by your standards], the current leadership is competent but doesn't have the full support of the nation. Dissension grows daily. Forget Vietnam.........what are you going to do about Iraq? What have you hawks learned about fighting an unpopular war within the context of a democracy? Clearly, Cheney hasn't learned squat! And the wuss presented his hawkish views in front of the VFW......scared to go in front of real civilians, huh?

I would have laughed my ass off had they booed the former equipment salesman to Sodom off the stage. I bet Cheney waited for the Iraqi bill to HAL to be paid off before pushing for war. It really galls me that these old farts decide on going to war like its a day at the beach and then send in the young guys to do their dirty work. I bet if they were the ones who had to fight, they would think twice.
