LONDON (CBS.MW) - Sales of mobile phones rose 0.8 percent in the second quarter to 98.7 million handsets as Nokia increased its lead over rivals, a market research report on Tuesday said.

Nokia's (NOK: news, chart, profile) share rose 5 percent over the second quarter last year to 35.6 percent. Nokia gained share over the first quarter as well, selling 35 million handsets in the second quarter, up from 32.5 million in the first quarter for a 34.7 percent share, Gartner Dataquest said.

The gains in unit sales partially reflect a push to clear out inventory ahead of new models with greater applications and features like color screens. Average selling prices have declined for the handsets; Gartner is forecasting an average price of 70 euros a phone ($68) by the fourth quarter.

Motorola (MOT: news, chart, profile) held to a second place share at 15.7 percent, the U.S. manufacturer saw its market share rise from 15.5 percent in the first quarter of this year.

Germany's Siemens (SI: news, chart, profile) remained fourth place as its share rose to 8.4 percent from 7.4 percent. Gartner analysts attributed some of Siemens' share gains to aggressive pricing.

Third-place Samsung saw its share spike to 9.5 percent from 6.5 percent in last year's period. Gartner is attributing the rise in Samsung's unit sales to the popularity of one of its lower priced models.

Joint venture SonyEricsson, linking Sony (SNE: news, chart, profile) and Sweden's Ericsson (ERICY: news, chart, profile), is now ranked fifth, down from Ericsson's stand-alone 7.7 percent share a year ago.
