I could accept the US as being a quasi-empire but I still have problems viewing us as an empire.

One of the primary reasons for the great power of the United States is its unity. As time has gone by, the American people have become more and more similar, without regard to geographical distances. This has come about from our melting pot.

But one of the consequences of this is that Americans have difficulty understanding how heterogenous the rest of the world is. It's our experience that people in the next state over are very similar, in culture and habits to the people in our own state. So we tend to think that other countries are similarly homogenous.

The Latif article on Saudi Arabia really surprised me. I had no idea that Saudi Arabia was that differentiated. See #reply-17921170
