Flarion's trial with Nextel was successful from the data I have seen (I did not actually see or hear any of the results). Flarion claims that they will do voice also and that they will have a "phone" that will permit multimode operation. From my perpective I don't see them "winning" any exsiting carriers over--they seem to have missed a point with CDMA2000 in that you can roll-out CDMA2000 1X EV-DO in high density areas and leave 1X in place in the outer rings of a network without any problems. Flarion's solution requires it to be built out everywhere. The Nextel trial follow-up will be interesting--it is not clear to me if they just wanted to use Flarion to get an advantage in their pricing for 1X or if they are serious.
