Jeff--Interesting questions--first to AMPS--the FCC has killed it--or at least set a sunset schdule for it-so no I don't see it staying around--although TDMA will be around for a long time--as far a funds to merge/buy you are correct and the longer they all build out the same markets the worse off they will be which is why I suspect that there is some heavy duty talking going on at the moment--I wrote a piece about AT&T and VoiceStream in NYC--suggesting that AT&T and Cingular could use VoiceStream's network (T-Mobile sorry) for their GSM play (as Cingular is not doing), rip out their TDMA 850- stuff, build GSM in 850 and then all share VoiceStream's 1900 Mhz spectrum for EDGE???? or UMTS--so there are those possiblities too--but I think that AT&T has money and Cingular or VoiceStream can "find" money in order to make some of this work--but again, I have found that the unlikely is the most likely to happen.
