I don't recall any "pre-commercial" or other language being attached to the original announcement, and got the impression that it was to be a full-blown commercial launch. Naturally, there were no handsets. The date then was moved to March, now it's "precommercial" in September. >> Your recall is somewhat different than mine. << The cabal haters around here are going to have a blast. >> Do "cabal haters" have a gene for selective recall? << Nokia and Sonera had originally set January '02 as the goal for launching wCDMA in Finland. >> The Finnish government (Ministry of Transport and Communications) set that "goal" as a 3G license condition. Sonera met that condition: >> Another 3G network launches in Finland Cellular News 04-Jan-02cellular-news.com Sonera Corporation opened its Finnish 3G network on January 1, 2002. In line with the licence conditions, Sonera's UMTS network operates in the largest four towns in Finland, i.e. the Helsinki metropolitan area, Oulu, Tampere and Turku. The network will be expanded in future based on commercial demand. Commercial service provision is scheduled to start when UMTS phones are available to consumers. Until then, the Finnish UMTS network will be in Sonera's own test use. Sonera estimates that the UMTS market in Finland will be launched on a wider scale in 2004 and 2005. Sonera estimates that the total costs of building an UMTS network in Finland will amount to about US$450 million in 2000 to 2009. The equipment for Sonera's UMTS network are provided by Ericsson and Nokia. << Presumably Sonera upgraded infra to R99-June 2001 prior to the launch. The item 45 days earlier refers to the R99, December 2000 version of the standard. >> Phone Call Made Between 3G Networks Cellular News 19-Nov-01cellular-news.com Mr. Olli-Pekka Heinonen, the Finnish Minister of Transport and Communications has made the first inter-continental UMTS phone call to Finland last Friday. This was the first call of its kind between two operators' 3G networks, the DoCoMo network in Japan and the Sonera network in Finland. The phone call was made between Mr. Olli-Pekka Heinonen, who is on a visit to Japan, and Mrs. Anni Vepsäläinen, Senior Vice President, Sonera Mobile Operations, at Sonera's premises in Finland. Mr. Heinonen made the phone call from Tokyo, using the commercial 3G FOMA network of the Japanese mobile operator DoCoMo. The phone call was made with a Japanese phone and received with a Nokia 3G phone at Sonera's premises in Finland. Sonera's 3G network is based on the 3GPP Release 99, December 2000 version of the WCDMA standard, and the first phase of it is supplied by Nokia. The phone receiving the call is an early version of a commercial Nokia WCDMA phone. << 15 months ago Sonera gave notice of the fact that their initial launch would be without handsets: >> Finland May Get A 3G Network Without Any Customers 17-May-01 Cellular Newscellular-news.com The Finnish 3G license holder, Sonera has said that it may have to launch its 3G network without any handsets to make phones calls with. Under the terms of their license, the Finnish networks are obliged to start commercial services by January 2002, and Sonera has said that delays in developing the 3G handsets may result in the network operating commercially, but no customers using it. Finland's telecoms regulator is said to be investigating a delay to the commercial launch date due to the problems in securing 3G cell phone handsets. Sonera has not said how much it would cost to operate the 3G network on a monthly basis without any customers." << - Eric -
