I did not "proclaim the ideas nothing but symbolic scraps of paper and cloth". It sure seemed like it to me when you said "What you have really done is destroy a piece of dyed cloth." "Destroying a flag DOES NOT destroy the nation or ideas behind it. They are still there, just as serviceable as before. As long as the PEOPLE of this country believe in those IDEAS and are willing to defend them, they are safe. The bombing of pearl harbor did not destroy the nation either. It was an assault. If people who had sworn an allegiance to protect the nation did not come to her defense the nation would have eventually been destroyed. People also swear an allegiance to the Flag and what it stands for. Burning the flag is an assault on the ideas that it stands for. "As long as the PEOPLE of this country believe in those IDEAS and are willing to defend them, they are safe." Are these empty words? "And no bonfire will change that. Apparently....
