I said the cloth was cloth and the paper was paper. Ands those ideas? They're still ideas.

In this country you have the right to say that the gov't is evil and crazy and should be replaced by some other form of gov't- -as long as you do not advocate the use of force to accomplish your ends. It is perfectly legal to disagree thoroughly with the gov't. And it is legal to express that disagreement as long as you are not violent.

The bombing of pearl harbor did not destroy the nation either.
And that was the use of violence against gov't employees and gov't property.

It was an assault.
Precisely. And buying and burning a piece of cloth is not.

Burning the flag is an assault on the ideas that it stands for.</i?>
And it is perfectly legal - and should be - to disagree with those ideas.

THAT is what freedom of speech and freedom of the press are about.

"As long as the PEOPLE of this country believe in those IDEAS and are willing to defend them, they are safe."

Are these empty words?

Do you think so? I think as long as the people of this country are willing to put it all on the line to defend democracy and those freedoms, anyone who thinks about assaulting had better think again.

As a previous version of the flag said, "Don't tread on me".
