This is silly. If it has no value, why did you pay $30k for it? Could it be that it actually does have value - i.e. "utility" - in that you can use it for several years to perform whatever function it was designed to perform? A million dollar machine may only have a salvage value of 10 cents on the dollar once it is installed, but that does not change its classification as a capital asset or its useful life.

Whether you can resell it right after you buy it is irrelevant unless either you bought it for resale or you intend to dispose of it and NOT use it in your business because you found out too late it is useless.
