If Taiwan was invaded by China and the US intervened our mission would be to sink the Chinese invasion fleet. Which at the moment would not be difficult. The Chinese could use land based aircraft and missiles to try to punish the US Navy but could not stop us from sinking an invasion fleet. If China just bombarded Taiwan with missles our mission would be a bit harder. We would have to shoot down the missiles (which we really can't do to well yet) and/or take out the missile launchers (possible for fixed launches but a real pain in the ass, bordering on imposible to take out a large number of mobile launchers).

Realisticly I think a US show of force would cause China to back down now. Maybe in a generation or two the balance of power will have changed but for now China wants no part of a war against the US. At best (for them, obviously worst for us) they could make it expensive for us but their chance of winning a war at sea against the US closely approaches 0%.
