Not so, the flurry of harebrained acquisitions started with Barrett. Grove was quoted back then as saying he would have gone much more slowly (sorry, no link).

re: I see that as on Andy's watch too. It's really a lot to ask for a company to maintain a clear performance lead consistently over a long period of time.

It's my assumption that the acquisitions, one or more a month for a while there, was the reason Intel took it's eye off the ball, and fell behind with the processor division. I remember quotes at the time saying it wasn't cool to be in the processor part of the Intel then, that the real prestige was in the new companies (again, sorry, no link).

Barrett seems to be doing much better now cutting the losses on his previous errors. Investing in the core cash cow and fewer but better non-core businesses. But Intel would be a much stronger company now without his early mistakes.
