Possibly. Maybe not but the risk was high enough that we had to deal with it.

if the Saudis feel they are in that much danger, let them put together their own army.

Without our help (or the help of other powerful nations) they really wouldn't be able to do it.

But with the Saudis, we are in a dependent relationship in which we are the ones more in need.

Not really. Worst comes to worst and they need our protection, and as far as the oil goes we do need to buy it bt they need to sell it even more then we need to buy it.

I think we look weak because we have these dependent relationships like with the Saudis. The whole world knows we are not strong enough to cut back our life style and reduce our dependency on oil...

I think that opinion is far from the reality.
