I don't think you are a traitor. <g> I've made the point before that these criminal scumbags that perpetrated 9/11 are no more Muslims who are faithful to those teachings than "catholics" who kill abortion doctors are good Catholics and faithful to thsoe teachings...

There are very few Americans who genuinely understand radical Islamism well enough that I can stomach reading them...

Hello Cobalt Blue,

Thank you for your thoughtful post.

Classic Post Award, CB! Thanks for putting most of our thoughts in clear language.

Send it to the NEA.

BTW, In opposition to the NEA article, the New York Federation of Teachers (didn't know there were other teachers unions) and another (WVa I believe) countered with their thoughts. I saw it someplace in my "travels" and now can't find it.

Bin Laden objects to the United States having military bases in Saudi Arabia for reasons he says are religious. His own country has rejected him and he lives in exile. [while paying him millions in tribute, but nevermind...] Congress has authorized the use of military force against Al Qaeda and anyone assisting Al Qaeda and any country harboring Al Qaeda. We have killed many Al Qaeda members, imprisoned some, and are hunting the rest down. This is a joint international effort by many nations.

Stuff like that. Hard facts, things we know are true, things anybody can understand.

I would also teach the children by showing them photographs of the broad outpouring of support all over the world, that America is loved, and that people all over the world were sorry about what happened.

I would also teach the children that some people in our country decided that they hated all Muslims, that all Muslims were enemies of the United States, and these people even killed some people or tried to kill some people (even some Sikhs) and damaged Muslim property, and that's wrong. That's not what Americans do.

Sure, CB, I have no problem with this plan...did you see any of these "hard facts", even one, on the NEA's site? I didn't. The NEA seems to averse to discussing facts, as opposed to feelings, which they plan to discuss endlessly, judging from their recommended lesson plans.

The broad outpouring of support is not specific to America. The support is because of the human tragedy. Germany is also receiving a "broad outpouring of support" due to its current human tragedy.

I believe it is important to tell the children the truth. At one time America was almost universally "loved". However that isn't the case anymore. America has alienated large portions of the ME (edit) with its policy. Also America has alienated many others with its position on global warming.

IMO it is a bit simplistic and somewhat disingenuous to indicate "America is loved." I agree with the thrust of your post. I would tell the children that there are a lot of people who don't like American POLICY. That's what I believe so that is what I would tell them.
