John, Re: "The only thing that I can figure that is keeping the stock price stable is that there must be a very positive buzz on the street about hammer. Why else would anyone want to own the stock?"

I can think of a few reasons.

1) The industry is underestimating a recovery in market demand, which would improve earnings for all players in the market, and provide relief for AMD.

2) The analysts are underestimating Hammer. Hard to believe, given that Hammer has such high expectations already, but I think that some see it as an inflection point for the whole computer industry (64-bits, new bus architecture, low latency memory).

3) Intel will end up less competitive than previously thought. The notion is that the performance race is cyclical, and AMD is due for some better execution, and vice-versa.

Basically, it boils down to either AMD being more competitive, Intel being less competitive, or the market improving overall. Personally, I wouldn't invest in AMD until I see all three of the above, and right now, even one in three is looking dubious.
