Genesis records very long life spans until the great flood when they decrease dramatically. Creationists assume changes in the environment account for this. Bible genealogies rarely contain daughters and it is accepted as well that many sons are also omitted. This combined with the life spans would account for Cain's concern.

Wars recorded in the Old Testament don't read very well today. Clans were as much or more warlike than today. Instructions by the Creator to the Israelites to be merciless in battle would be justified by the preservation of the Jews and the ensuing Messiah. The Midianites recorded in Numbers 31 would have been decedents from Abraham's second wife. Abraham's first wife was Sarah and it was with her handmaiden Abraham fathered Ishmael, the proposed progenitor of Arabs today. Later Sarah begat Isaac, the progenitor of the Jews. After Sarah's death, Abraham took a second wife that bore him four sons, one of which was Midian. Obviously, there has been a lot of feuding in this family.
