My uncle had the highest level of respect for Vann. I read "A Bright Shining Lie" and it took him down a few pegs in my book. BUT...you're right about a few things. He definitely was a hot dog, and he was gung ho about the war.
He actually had a plan on how to win the war, and it likely would have succeeded had it been implemented early on. But, as he pointed out to Ellsberg, it was a politicians' war and, as such, unwinnable. He got caught up in his own ego when he went back because he felt his ideas were finally being implemented (though he probably knew they weren't).
Still, he was a remarkable man in many respects. From what I've heard, he was the person that Coppola used to model Duvall's character in "Apocalypse Now". Greatest scene in any war movie, in my book, was when they took that beach.
