Tip,

You raise very valid points about H as an energy storage mechanism. Perhaps it is a good storage means for intermittent energy sources such as wind and solar. Surely as efficient if not more so than pumped hydro storage, as used in CA today?

There are vast tracts of 'worthless' land bathed in solar radiation daily. Pipelines could carry the resulting H to point source applications, perhaps with less energy loss than electrical transmission? I don't know, I haven't worked the numbers.

And there recently was completed a solar film production facility, near San Diego I believe. Do a google search on 'self assembling solar' and see what you turn up. I think we may be on the cusp of larger scale solar conversion becoming more economic, but then what about nighttime? Hydrogen anyone?

FWIW

how much energy does it take to get gasoline in your tank?

exploration in the plains and deserts
gaggling about in securing permits for land rights
wasting time with politicians and corporate owners for graft
waste the methane excess in a big constant fireball
get the heavy equipment into the remote areas
drill empty holes
drill good productive holes
transport the many personnel to remote locations
build housing facilities to support the critical people
transport the crude oil to the port
protect the transportation from marauders
fill the supertankers at the terminals
deal with spills in pristine areas (e.g. Exxon Valdez)
cross the friggin ocean with the crude oil
empty the tankers at the destination port
fill the huge port oil silos that dot our beautiful landscape
transport the crude oil to refineries
nay, build the complex array of refineries first
build the many supporting environmental purification systems
deal with the health costs associated with envmtal health hazards
extract and construct complex octane molecules thru coke cracking
transport the gasoline to the gas stations
deal with the leakage in the older stations

not to mention the $50 Billion annually to defend militarily the entire MidEast region !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

are you kidding me????????????????????????????????????

before you speak of efficiency, compare systems instead
an oceanside series of solar electrolysis plants could produce vast amounts of hydrogen gas
from Tijuana to Portland Oregon
the entire Mexican coast could participate and develop an export industry
very very feasible
of course, distribution is the main issue
just another obstacle, easily overcome with the right leadership, incentive, and mindset
