GE has been in the longest (former employee). There were 30 back then, and they were just very low priced.
I'm pretty sure there were always 30, but I'm not 100% sure.

It seems to me the DJIA had 30 stocks back then. I seem to recall it being known as the "Dow 30" in those days. I don't think it initially had 30 when it was conceived. I also don't have a clue about the oldest member. I do recall back in the 60's and 70's that Johns-Manville was a member... and look at it now, a dog.
