Brave can characterize people with whom you vehemently disagree. Japanese soldiers isolated on Pacific Islands in Post-WWII could be argued to be brave and steadfast. Nazi fighter pilots would probably have been brave too. Heck, even Kamikaze were brave in a strangely zealous way - it couldn't be easy to fly for hours, knowing that at the end you were going to crash your plan into a ship filled with combatants. I agree that foolhardy is on a continuum with brave. It is the good connotation that people have in their own minds (Home of the Brave and all that) that probably disturbs people the most. Of course only OUR side can be brave. The rest have to be cowards by extension.
