What we want from other countries is either respect, fear, or a combination of both.

Agreed from a national security point of view WRT our enemies. WTC was a major victory for AQ as they proved the US is not invincible. The more the US responds as a wounded animal the greater their victory. Fear and respect is now water under the bridge. This war can only be won with a change in foreign policy and PR. The underlying strength of the enemy must be removed.

What we want from other countries?.....I will add oil, money and cheap labor. That is the perception and there is a lot of truth to it. Fear and respect don't play a role here.

It is unfortunate because the image the US projects through Hollywood and corporate greed is not the heart and sole of America. The US would gain strength and respect if it could change its image to better reflect the nature of its citizens. Fear and respect as a foreign policy goal just makes the US look like a bully.
