LIBERTYVILLE, Ill., Sept. 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- mmO2 and Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) today announced a new downloadable entertainment service that provides consumers with the ability to personalize and differentiate their mobile phones. Motorola's Mobile Services Cafe is a managed service powered by Motorola's download server with Java(TM) 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME(TM)) technology. Motorola will supply and operate its powerful download server with J2ME technology for O2's new commercial games service, the O2 games arcade, bringing a more exciting and colorful gaming experience to mobile phones. Consumers can now chose mobile games such as retro classics Breakout(R), Asteroids(R) and Pong(R) from top brand Atari. Some of the new, graphically rich wireless games being offered by O2 games arcade are made available from Motorola's mobile game publishing arm and were launched for the UK market at the beginning of September, and German, Netherlands and Irish markets from the beginning of October. Mobile games are becoming one of the hottest trends in wireless and industry analyst firm Ovum forecasts that global spending on mobile games will total 4.4 billion Euros by 2006. Motorola will shortly extend the technologies within Mobile Services Cafe by integrating the Pecan games platform from Cash-U. The platform will enhance the overall mobile games experience by initially enabling consumers to post high-scores. These services will be enhanced over time and game-players will also have the ability to compete, simultaneously against other subscribers throughout the O2 network. By adding these types of community features, O2 will also have an opportunity to generate additional average revenue per unit (ARPU). Tim Raby, Head of Games at O2 states, "O2 believes that Java is a major enabler for the growth of mobile entertainment, in particular games. Motorola is a leader in this field, both with its handsets and its download server. Mobile Services Cafe provides flexible technology and an attractive business model that does not force the Operator to take all the risk launching a new platform technology." "The relationship between Motorola and O2 signals a new business model within the industry," said Mike Bordelon, corporate vice president and general manager within Motorola's Personal Communications Sector. "By integrating Mobile Services Cafe from Motorola, O2 has the ability to enter the market quickly without high up-front costs and personalize the O2 end-user experience. Mobile Services Cafe is the first business model for data applications that reduces operator risk without loss of control of the consumer offering." O2 chose Mobile Services Cafe to launch O2's own portfolio of downloadable J2ME games. Motorola will provide all the back-end support and operate the system as a managed service integrated into O2's branded portal. Motorola is supplying Mobile Services Cafe on a risk/reward basis, reducing O2's financial exposure while giving O2 the control and flexibility to select game content and user experience. Motorola is leading the industry in bringing J2ME technology to wireless communications. In addition to contributing to key, open J2ME standards and launching the first wireless phone incorporating the technology, Motorola continues to offer its customers a portfolio of solutions including more than dozen wireless phones with J2ME technology, branded applications and content and a full service developer program to assist software developers in creating and certifying new wireless applications.
