The product, expected to ship to handset makers by the middle of next year, enables both carriers and users to manage multimedia content on Java-ready phones. Revealed this week at the JavaOne conference in Tokyo, Mobile JAM Plus seeks to meet handset vendor requirements for easier Java integration and faster time to market, while also providing features enhancing the mobile phone experience. Features include a content and applications catalog that can reside on the handset for quick navigation of downloadable programs. Managed by the carrier, the catalog also enables carriers to promote selected content. Photo previews, zooming and enhancement as well as integration with messaging and camera software on the phone give a consistent way to use photo applications. Mobile JAM Plus also includes several security options. ''Java technology is a critical, core handset ingredient -- and just like the browser it is far too important for it to be an island on the phone,'' says Thomas Reardon, co-CTO of Openwave Systems. ''Downloading and managing all kinds of content and applications -- whether photos, Java applications or ring tones -- will provide a more simple, fun and consistent experience on the mobile phone.'' Separately, the wireless browser and software provider also today launches the 6.1 version of its Mobile Browser, enabling application downloads and new mobile services such as games, ringtones, Java applications and other types of content. Openwave Mobile Browser is now available on the PCS Phone by LG Model 5350. << - Eric -
