If you had only two choices for this murderer, death or 16 years, which would you choose?

What is needed is to make life without possibility of parole a real deal

Simply and positively just can't be done. If a life-without-parole con is looking toward 50 years in prison, anything and everything can happen. Laws that were made can be unmade. Judges can re-sentence as in Karen's example. Governors can grant pardons or clemency. Cons can escape, as six did from a model death row facility in Virginia in the 1980s. There are numerous ways that we can find these killers on the streets again. Even if they remain in prison, they have a lifetime "get out of jail free" card to kill other inmates or correction officers with nothing whatsoever to lose.

If you recall the Lionel Tate case in Florida (the 14-year old who killed his playmate), no sooner was he sentenced to life-without-parole then the demands started for Jeb Bush to grant him clemency and a lighter sentence.

No matter how you slice it, there is no guarantee for society that those sentenced to "life-without-parole" will not take more lives before they die a natural death.
