life is not species specific

Unfortunately nanotech threatens the entire biosphere.

contributions to evolution

I think some of Joy's angst stemmed from his newness to the concepts. He admits to believing in some sort of Star Trek future where humans would go on largely unchanged for many centuries into the future. We live in a time when human knowledge is exponentially exploding. Our abilities to transform both our world and ourselves grow daily. Typically exponential growth - be it of human knowledge or Nasdaq prices - can only go so far before something gives.

Having lived with these ideas for a while, I come to not only accept, but to be proud to be a member of the "bridging species". The species that was the culmination of natural selection and the beginning of directed evolution. I just want there to be some continuation.

I believe we're in perilous times and saddled with "leaders" who are too dense to be cognizant of the problem - much less deal with it. Here's Shrub behaving like some nineteenth century sheriff leading the posse against a ninth century wannabe. That would be fine if this were the nineteenth century, but it’s the twenty first and we have some serious twenty first century problems. If there is even a germ of truth in the future that Joy, Kurzweil, Heilemann et al perceive then we need to be very careful and thoughtful in the way we proceed. Behaving like some political shill for various business interests just won't cut it.

All JMO.

Ok after that rant I'll lighten up. Maybe I'll join you at Sadies?<g>
