jla may be a political neanderthal
but he's a decent human being
with a strong moral sense
which is worth far more
in the end
than a basket of bon mots
and snipes
and ten-cent soapbox speeches
by those who posture
as deep-feeling souls.

FWIW, I think the only Neanderthal in the piece is TP. I said even as a chastised jla that I respect and often agree with his political views. I just think the burden is on him when he wants to squash somebody's speech, and he seemed to hold the "truth" to be self-evident while the rest of us didn't remember seeing enough there to get out the duct tape.

BTW, with the possible exception of parts of tomorrow, I will be offline until next Tuesday in all likelihood. Doesn't mean I'm a rat deserting a sinking ship. I may be a rat, but I don't view the ship as sinking.

I see the point, but I have to say that I don't think either patriotism or courage are unique to any particular ideology or personality type.

I recall seeing a list, somewhere, of politicians and other prominent sorts that had weaseled out of military service. All ideological stripes were well represented.

JLA may well have earned the right to his opinions, but I don't think he's earned the right to keep anybody else's opinions off the board.
