An extremely interesting article on Iran in this morning's New York Times. Looks as if Khatami is moving things in the direction of a serious confrontation.

He has said stuff like this before, but he has never managed to gain real power. It's good to see he's making another try, but I'll believe in his success when I see it.

Sounds to me Khatami is reacting to the US withdrawing support and dialogue and fostering ties directly with more... strenuous... supporters of reform. Khatami may be trying to recapture reformist support since he looked very much the part of the mullah's pet and actually went along with threatening the reformists in parliament.
