Employers are interested in such facts for good reason.

Of course they are. And I'm sure this one knew. Uncle Sam takes fingerprints and does background checks on everyone he hires.

If you believe you were in the right and that your conviction was unjust ... then why lie about it? To anyone?
I did not get the impression that he was ashamed of what he had done. My sense of him is that he comes from a family tradition of liberal intellectuals. Still, there are reasons for not drawing attention to oneself. I have never known anyone else who had trouble with the law. I really had to restrain myself to keep from asking him a million questions about his experience and to never mention the subject again after than lunch. He must have known he could trust me, but not everyone would have been so restrained. Would you really want to be known around the office is the guy who did that and have to deal with everyone's questions, both asked and implied? What a distraction. I wonder about people who, say, win the lottery and then go on TV. I'd want my name withheld. Who wants to be "the woman who won the lottery?" It would be a long time, if ever, before you could have a normal conversation with anyone. How do you discuss AIDS in Africa or the best place to find rotisserie chicken with people who just want to know if you know Tom Cruise or what it was like to win a gold medal?

I suppose you might say that he can lie to friends and neighbors, as it is none of their business, although that seems hardly praiseworthy.

So I'm interested in why you consider it "hardly praiseworthy" to play down such things and try to keep a normal focus in your life.
