And,If you love your coin collection ,actual short term fluctuation in value is of less importance.
If you havent got a copy already check out Breen's Encyclopedia of US Coins. In a way ,why certain coins are rare or common, or always in good condition or always well worn provides incites into how and why the coins circulated or not. That is, some types are in good condition because they were largely a form of reserves,or savings, stashed and not circulated ie. larger gold coins, some are in good condition because they were unpopular ie morgan dollars, some are rare because many were melted for a higher bullion value vs. face value, some ,like the 1933 st.gaudin 20$, unique because of changes in monetary policy. In a way the study of old coins is the study the physical trail left by spending and saving habits and monetary policy over the corse of history. The lessons are often more implied than spelt out and at times conterintuitive.
