Yes, that matters.

It is hard for me to tell whether we have any real argument here.

I didn't think we were arguing. I imagined us fleshing this thing out collaboratively. I don't think I have a position yet.

(And self-gain would include being accepted in any kind of community or relationship where the truth about yourself would cause you a problem).

But I'm starting to form one. And I think it has more to do with looking forward than looking back. If people are living a good life going forward, I'm more inclined to grant them their privacy. We know that it's hard if not impossible for a child molester to change so the public has a right to know about past deeds. Other past deeds are not so predictive of the future. If the past stays in the past and the individual is working to atone, I'm inclined to let it stay hidden. Perhaps it's just that I was recently discussing Les Miz with someone and the theme lingers in my mind.
