Hi Rude, I have access to the employee purchase area of the website, so I just clicked on the model I wanted (all are shown) and bought it. You can get the machine with 1GB that way. I bought it as a portable trading workstation and backup at home. I saw an intriguing setup at the Trading Expo last winter where a laptop powered three LCD displays, two using it's built-in graphics system, and a third using a Margi PC card adapter that can power one external display. This way, I can 'seed' a vacation home with two cheapo large CRT displays, and just take the laptop with me and I'm in business!! I looked at the Dell laptop, nice machine, but I prefer IBM Thinkpads, and the price via the employee purchase route is way better than what I could get thru Dell anyway. I didn't even look at the CD burner speed, as that is a non-issue in regard to what I intend to use the box for. IBM uses an 'Ultrabay' scheme where you can swap components between laptops. I'll do backups using a 250mb 'ultrabay' Zip on the little data I will have on this box... It does have firewire, but again I won't be using it, at least in the near future...

Best regards,
John

Re: Portable Workstations

For compute intensive workstation use, an Athlon is better than a P4.

A Compaq 900 notebook with 1024meg of DDR RAM, an 1800+ Athlon, a 15" SVGX+ display, ATI Radeon graphics card, DVD/CD-RW combo drive, 10/100 wired and 802.11b wireless networking, a 40gig UDMA HD, and XP professional is $2,698.
