<And that's why Germany is at the forefront of stalking the perpetrators of 9-11 and has produced more direct evidence linking Atta and his ilk to Afghanistan than even the USA >

Jochen, that's not surprising since Atta and co seem to have been especially keen on Germany as a good, safe base for operations. NZ could try all it likes and come up with nothing because they don't set up shop here [I hope - but I suspect that has been changing because of our stupid immigration people letting 'refugees' in by the thousand].

Germany seems keen to leave the Arab analogue of Hitler in charge in Iraq [and whatever else he can take over]. To me, that's peculiar. I suppose the world hasn't really changed much since the 1930s - in the face of Adolf they were scared to say no and in Iraq they are scared to take action to end him before he starts throwing sand around the sandpit. Which he will do because that's his purpose in life = to live a grand life of confrontation and victory if possible and glorious defeat if unlucky.

Defeat is no bad thing if one fails while reaching for the stars. Better to aim for the moon and miss than live a life of quiet village peasantry and die in bed one night. That's the nature of megalomaniacs. They go for broke and only death will stop them. Being put in a cage will stop them too, but they'll be busting out any chance they get. They accept that challenge. It's their Everest - sure, they might die in the attempt to achieve greatness and the heights, but it's worth it. Everest is strewn with the bodies of those who sought the pinnacle of success.

There are megalomaniacs from around the world who have demonstrated the modus operandi. In some ways, life under a totalitarian ruler is quite pleasant - nearly everyone is behaving in a discreet way. However, the thugs grow too keen on their power and find no boundaries, making life quite unpleasant for most people with cruelty and theft. That's the history of the world since the days of socialized chimps, so it's not surprising that it's endemic in human social life.

In democracies, it's difficult for them to get a grip and even if they do, they have to mind their ps and qs or they'll be turfed out before they can do any major harm. Hitler managed to terrorize his way to power through the democratic process - ending it as soon as he had a good enough grip to kill the opposition, literally.

So, while it's true that sometime over the next 20 years, Saddam will be out. But he has a son [or two] who will carry on the family traditions. If Uday did contrive to get himself into the driving seat, and I understand the prospects of that are low due to his crazy violence, it would be a very ugly scene indeed.

Best to pull the plug now.
