WC, They were routing Japanese out of caves on some of these islands, well into the late 1950s. They were still fighting and had to be convinced by fellow countryman that the war had ended 10-15 years earlier. I remember seeing the newsreels as a young boy. I for one dont doubt that they would have fought to the last man unless the Emperor had an epiphany. Other than the A-Bomb what else could that have been? Look at Hitler--they followed scorched earth policy as well. And of course Saddam probably would too. mike
