BTW: Union slave states that had to await the end of the war for universal manumission were West Virginia, Maryland and Tennessee. I also seem to remember that some Union free states allowed one to keep one's slave, if one had brought the poor bastard in from a slave state, even though they outlawed the trade itself.

Abe Lincoln never freed a slave in his jurisdiction...
