In all wars, propaganda is generated to dehumanize the enemy. It turns out that the effect of that propaganda is strongest the farther people are from the place where the actual killing is done. There's a fascinating book (best seller in that sort of area) on the subject, but I can't remember the title. Maybe someone else will link it in. After the war, the combat veterans on the two sides usually have no problem treating each other as humans. Of course there are exceptions. I had a math instructor who would never forgive the Japanese. But he had survived the Bataan death march, which is not quite the same as combat. -- Carl
