It just as likely made it much more difficult because reform would be perceived as an American thing and make it much more difficult for reformers to work. But, obviously, neither of us know squat. One of those things we'll just have to wait and see.

Couldn't be any worse than it already was - reform wasn't going anywhere. A crackdown on reformers, as Khatami sanctioned for "upstart" reformers (led by his own brother) in Parliament, is a PR coup and will add legitimacy to their efforts in the hearts of the reform minded citizenry.

But you're absolutely right, we don't know squat and we can only wait and see.
