I'm not saying people shouldn't wear helmets. My kids always wore them. No law required.

And I agree with you about the cost thing. But maybe the better solution is to say that any parent who lets a child go without a helmet is personally responsible for all the costs of any injuries. Like the law that makes a person responsible for the costs of any fire they let happen. I can tell you, that law makes me even more careful with burnign leaves and brush than I might otherwise be.

Not a perfect solution, I agree, since it will have no impact on the very poor. But I really hate the creeping paternialism that is eroding our sense that people should bear the primary responsibility for the welfare of themselves and their families.
