c2,

re: Dr. Irwin Mark Jacobs

<< anyone ... who actually detests Dr. J. as intensely as you do ... You hate Dr. J. >>

You have a tendency to spin, but please do not attempt to put words in my mouth.

Let us get this much straight if we could ... or even if we can not.

I don't hate Dr. Irwin Jacobs any more than I hate Larry Ellison (whose company I am invested in), or Steve Jobs (whose company I am not invested in).

<< he calls 'em like he sees 'em >>

They all do.

They are unique, outspoken, charismatic, and colorful individuals (emphasis on individuals).

I admire all three for their accomplishments.

I do not, however, revere any one of them, and I do not hang on their every utterance or take that utterance as gospel.

When Dr. Jacobs stated in August or September of 2000 that the "second billion handsets" would be predominantly cdma, I didn't buy off on that hyperbole, but I certainly didn't "hate " him for saying it.

When Dr. Jacobs stated to the assembled press at CTIA in March of 2001 that he doubted that EDGE would ever see the light of day, I thought that was a potentially counterproductive statement at that time and in that venue, but I certainly didn't "hate " him for saying it.

When Dr. Jacobs nonchalantly stated this May to the assembled analysts that attended Analysts Day that there would be 170 million cdma subs at the end of this year, I knew that this was a gross exaggeration and wondered why he said it, but I certainly didn't "hate " him for saying it.

As for those 170 million subs, we have added 15.8 million in the first 6 months of this calendar year. That leaves only 42.85 million to go. No problemo for a technology this exciting. Right?
