It may not have any pragmatic effect, but I think it's an interesting question to ask.

In part, because our contemporary view of slavery is so one-sided, so absolute, that I think it helps to ask, is that the only legitimate way to talk about slavery? With slavery itself, the issue is, I hope, moot, but learning to think out of the box on some past issues may help us learn to think out of the box on current issues. Sort of like playing chess helps develop one's analytical thinking skills in areas more important than a game.

And I find it more interesting to ask questions like that than to spend my time, say, watching football or knitting doilies or reading romances or whatever people here do for recreation outside of SI.
