The V.90 modem thing is still very popular because it is very cheap and universally available.

Cable networks definitely were not designed to work in both directions. AT&T found that out.

Unfortunately, cable plants are saddled with finite bandwidth which requires stringent TCP traffic spying to force us to abide by the rules.

I have a choice between 4-6mb/sec with a cablemodem but cannot host a server or wireless bridge of any type or use a VPN tunnel to my employer.

I chose DSL. As long as I don't ping-flood the DoD, I never hear from them.
