A bad sign for Vesper....it looks like the "Vesper Portable" service has been suspended. Their website now features the non-portable WLL handsets.

vesper.com.br

Since the Vesper webpage doesnt ask what region of the country you are from, I have to assume that they are no longer selling the service anywhere in the country.

Not a good development.

re: WIPI (Wireless Internet Platform for Interoperability)

WIPI is a BREW competitor developed in Korea, but it may also be complementary to BREW, or at least its utilization may not be not mutually exclusive of BREW.

It was recently reported by the Korea Herald that Dr. Irwin Jacobs would be meeting shortly with Korean Information and Communication Minister Lee Sang-chul to discuss "who should take the initiative in promoting their mobile Internet platform standards, BREW and WIPI" and that Dr. Jacobs would seek the ministry's support for the use of Brew in Korea.

WIPI is a heterogeneous application run time environment (application execution environment) for mass market handsets.

Development of the specifications and implementation of WIPI began in 2001, with ETRI as the project manager. It was developed under the guidance of KWISF (Korea Wireless Internet Standardization Forum) and ETRI (Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute) and made an official standard in Korea through TTA (Telecommunication Technology Association).

A June 2002 Powerpoint overview of WIPI can be downloaded here:
