After Gettysburg, most were not only recent immigrants, but primarily Irish immigrants. They were herded off the boats in Boston and NY right into the Union Army camps, and told only that the Confederacy and England were best of friends. They thus fought and died like starving animals. The survivors returned to Boston and NY, and ran those cities for a century...
