It sounds like you are trying to divine Brimelow's motives, and then apply them to what he wrote in order to determine the meaning.

I take a different approach. I try not to concern myself with his motives. I try to read what he wrote without adding to or subtracting anything from it. That is the only way I have any hope of finding out what he meant without contaminating it with my previously held point of view.
