Worldwide shipments of mobile phones beat expectations for
the second quarter of this year, according to Strategy
Analytics.

Q2 handset shipments were 96.7 million units, up 6% from 91
million units shipped in Q1 of 2002 and an 11% jump from 86
million in the same period last year. The market analyst is
forecasting 417 million handsets to be delivered this year.

Analyst Chris Ambrosio said: "The Q2 shipments were slightly
higher than we expected them to be. We had estimated that
they would be at approximately 90 million units. But Q1 was
slightly lower than we expected, so the two balanced out."

And there are other positive signs.

"Subscriber growth has not been robust, but replacement
rates have stabilised in Q2," he said. "This is a positive sign
for Q3 2002, and if that trend continues, we could see a
positive holiday season."
