The Soviet Union was a rational opponent and could be depended upon to see the folly of mutually assured destruction. Saddam isn't that rational.

No, you probably didn't because we had the same and adhered to a containmen defense that came to be known as MAD, ie mutual assured destruction. This is the basic premise for my opposition to invading Iraq.....why would the guy commit suicide now? He is no military threat to anyone......
