Demonstrating the alliance’s positive momentum, this progress includes the release of the first specifications for public review, increased membership and a new organizational structure.First Specifications Available For Review OMA just released the OMA Download Feature Set for public review. The OMA Download Feature Set, comprised of five specifications, will enable the distribution and download of content to mobile terminals, independent of vendor. The set provides an application-level Over-the-Air protocol that enhances download reliability, and protocols and rules to associate digital rights with any content. In developing the feature set, OMA worked closely with other key industry organizations including the Third Generation Partnership Program (3GPP), 3GPP2, CDMA Development Group (CDG), the GSM Association, and the Java Community Process (JCP) to ensure interoperability and accelerate the adoption of these technologies in the marketplace. OMA encourages all parties interested to submit their comments on the specifications until September 7, 2002. The specifications are available at:openmobilealliance.org .Increasing Membership Since June, 21 new companies have joined OMA. Moreover, OMA has 32 new Sponsor companies – the highest grade of membership. To date, the membership of the Open Mobile Alliance covers the entire mobile services value chain, including the world’s leading mobile operators, device and network suppliers, information technology and infrastructure companies and content providers.New Organizational Structure Defined OMA has now installed a new organizational structure, representing the whole value chain in order to harmonize data and accelerate delivery of technical specifications and interoperability testing. This includes the formation of the OMA Technical Plenary, which is dedicated to facilitating the activities of the working groups and providing a solid infrastructure for the efficient creation of specifications. Additionally, OMA has established a new workgroup for Mobile Web Services. The group will create a specification suite that will aid developers in applying web service technology and standard development tools to discover, access and leverage the service enablers within the OMA framework. This will result in much richer application services for the mobile user. The specification suite will provide developers with bearer-agnostic mobile network service components such as location, content downloading, device management and presence. Other new workgroups include Requirements, Architecture, and Interoperability. The Requirements group identifies and specifies technical requirements for development of mobile services. The Architecture group defines the overall OMA system architecture including evolution, integration and maintenance. The Interoperability group ensures end-to-end interoperability.About The Open Mobile Alliance (Oma) The Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) delivers open standards for the mobile industry, helping to create interoperable services which work across countries, operators and mobile terminals and are driven by users’ needs. To expand the mobile market, companies supporting the Open Mobile Alliance will work to stimulate the fast and wide adoption of a variety of new, enhanced mobile information, communication and entertainment services. The Open Mobile Alliance includes all key elements of the wireless value chain, and contributes to the timely and efficient introduction of services and applications.
