I cannot say for certain about the comparison, but it is the case that they were regarded as property, and had no legal standing, although sometimes there were laws regulating their treatment, much as we have protective laws against cruelty to animals.......

I'm not up on slavery in the classical world, but it's my impression that they had certain rights, such as exemption from mandatory military service

That seems more like a right of the owner not to have his property taken away in to the military.
