Why was today a surprise?

a) The Nikkei reached a 19 year low in last night's trading.
b) INTC was downgraded before the market opened.
c) Citibank/group was downgraded before the open.
d) All weekend long we have heard about how Sept is the worst month for the markets.
e) The overall trend is still down in almost every major index.
f) This morning's major economic news release showed the ISM # weaker than expected.
g) For 3 days the administration has been talking up going to war with Iraq.
h) Traders who have been on vacation have come back and picked up right where they left off, selling and shorting.
i) even the 7% growth shown in the semi statistics today had important pockets of weakness, most specifically they took out and shot just about everything in wireless related companies

>> when people who make up the market decide to wait until the end of summer to start trading, er selling again?

Brian, of the threads I watch on SI only two people have indicated selling anything in the past 2 days. Both stated their reason is they felt prices will drop. So one shorted for profit, and one sold a long position for a loss. And both sold after their stocks had already come down 20%-30% from a week ago.

So it is seems the selling is just trend following and is not fundamental. The same people would buy (and in fact did buy) the same stocks at double the current price a while back.

edit. The fact of my response does not mean that I meet your requirement stated below.

A Question for those mush smarter than I:

Brian, if indeed the big traders came back from the beach today, then there is an explanation for today's drop: they wanted to show us who's boss.

HI Brian,

A very reliable viewpoint on the double dip:http://www.thestreet.com/comment/spincycle/10040304.html

Perhaps a reprieve:http://www.cme.com/httpwrapper.cfm?wrap=/wrappedpages/delayed_intraday_quotes/10min_globex_flash_quote/gflash.html
