qlong - Don't know about the numbers inconsistency but there is a very good explanation by Paul Jacobs at the end of the Pacific Crest webcast on the q site about why China subscribers have turned around recently and why they were slow earlier. The earlier problems have to do with the Chinese launching a new site and then also using a new configuration for handsets with the SIM-UIM card. This meant there were no handsets available in inventory that were made for other markets that were available. Also Chinese handset makers were cautious and didn't make enough until they saw demand. So handsets were expensive, consumers were cautious. Around July/August, supply started to become available in larger quantities, prices dropped. This also made it possible for subsidies to be more successful. In addition new marketing channels kicked in to push the handsets. One was a Postal exchange buying handsets for mail carriers to offer calling services while on their rounds. In addition, Unicom realized that targeting the high end of consumers with "low radiation and better quality calls" wasn't going to cut in until they had 1X and could offer new services. So they decided to target down market finally and offered low cost plans and pre-paid type plans with low minutes that made the service available to students and others. Combined with low cost phones these led to rapid acceleration in uptake. Tom
