But I'll leave you with this. The South didn't secede over slavery per se. Indeed, some northern states still had slavery. It seceded for a complex set of reasons, but mostly economic. Indeed, a number of slaves volunteered to fight for the South.

Lincoln didn't free the slaves because of altruism. He did it hoping that the slaves would rise up and revolt, and hoping to destroy the war economy of the South.

That's all too simplistic -- there was a lot going on -- but the main impetus of the secession was economics, not metaphysics.

That's not what I was taught in high school, but it's what I've learned is much more accurate than what I was taught in high school.

Anyhow, I can't continue tonight unless I want to appear in the divorce court as a litigant instead of as a lawyer. <g>
